Benefits Of Laser Skin Resurfacing For Aging, Damaged, Or Uneven Skin

Laser skin resurfacing is the gold standard in aesthetic medicine for the treatment of deep wrinkles, scarring, and uneven skin tone and texture. It is a highly effective anti-aging treatment that yields dramatic results for those who are looking to achieve smoother, firmer, and more youthful skin, while also reducing the appearance of sun damage and scarring. Between them, the two leading skin resurfacing technologies – ProFractional laser resurfacing and Contour TRL laser resurfacing – are able to treat a wide variety of skin concerns, making laser resurfacing a highly versatile aesthetic treatment that delivers exceptional results for every client. If you want to achieve comprehensive skin rejuvenation but other treatments and products have failed to provide noticeable results, laser skin resurfacing is the perfect treatment for you.

What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

As we age, our collagen levels decline and the structure of our skin weakens, losing its elasticity and volume. This can lead to lax, dull skin that has deep wrinkles and poor texture. These issues also affect skin that has been badly sun-damaged or has scarring due to acne or trauma. A few decades ago, there were limited interventions available to address these skin concerns – until laser technology started revolutionizing aesthetic medicine. Today, laser skin resurfacing is considered to be one of the most effective non-surgical interventions for the rejuvenation and repair of damaged, aged skin. ProFractional laser resurfacing and Contour TRL laser resurfacing are widely recognized to be at the forefront of this technology.

All laser resurfacing treatments operate according to the same basic principle: a powerful laser beam is directed onto the treatment area, penetrating deep into the skin tissues. The laser exposes the skin to high-intensity light energy, which is then absorbed as heat energy by the skin cells in the dermis. This creates microscopic wounds deep in the skin tissues, triggering the body’s natural healing response, stimulating the production of new collagen and remodeling existing collagen fibers. In turn, lost skin volume is restored, the texture of the skin is improved, and imperfections such as wrinkles and scarring are dramatically reduced.

What Are The Benefits Of Laser Skin Resurfacing?

As the lasers used in aesthetic medicine can be set to different wavelengths to target different layers in the skin, laser resurfacing can treat a variety of skin concerns. More superficial laser treatments, such as the Nano Laser Peel, improve fine lines, dull and uneven skin tone, and enlarged pores. More advanced laser treatments, such as Micro Laser Peel, target sun damage, hyperpigmentation, pigmented lesions, wrinkles, and skin laxity and dullness. The deepest laser skin resurfacing treatments, such as ProFractional, not only address the signs of aging but also significantly reduce the appearance of scars.

A major benefit of laser skin resurfacing is that it is a highly versatile procedure. Laser treatments can be thought of as aesthetic medicine’s ‘one-stop-shop’, because depending on the depth and wavelength of the laser used, any number of skin concerns can be treated. The result is a treatment solution that is capable of being customized to every client’s individual aesthetic goals and tolerance for downtime.

Types Of Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatments

There are two laser resurfacing technologies that are widely regarded to be the most effective on the market: Contour TRL laser resurfacing and ProFractional laser resurfacing. Your aesthetic physician will be able to advise you on which is most appropriate for your skin concerns. All treatments are relatively painless, and your provider will apply a topical numbing treatment when necessary for your comfort. Let’s take a closer look at each to gain a more detailed understanding of their many aesthetic benefits.

Contour TRL Laser Resurfacing

The Contour Tunable Resurfacing Laser (TRL) device allows aesthetic providers to fine-tune resurfacing treatments to precisely target their client’s skin imperfections while accommodating their preferred downtime. The device can penetrate anywhere from 10 to 700 microns in depth, meaning it can provide both powerful resurfacing treatments and more superficial, gentler laser peels.

Contour TRL Laser Resurfacing treatments include both the Nano Laser Peel, often called the ‘lunchtime peel’ thanks to its limited downtime of two to three hours, and the Micro Laser Peel, which is more effective for treating sun damage and more advanced aging but requires a downtime of between 1-7 days depending on the depth of the treatment.

ProFractional Laser Resurfacing

ProFractional laser resurfacing is the most advanced resurfacing treatment that uses an adjustable erbium laser of 2940 nm wavelength to penetrate into the deepest layers of the dermis. The ProFractional laser beam is ‘fractionated’, meaning it exposes the skin to multiple tiny columns of laser light, rather than a single laser beam. This creates channels of ‘micro wounds’ rather than removing entire layers of skin. The result is a more comfortable treatment with a faster recovery time than traditional laser treatments. Generally, you will need only a few days’ downtime and your skin should heal fully within a week, although treatment for deep scarring may require a longer recovery time.

ProFractional laser resurfacing is highly recommended for the treatment of surgical scars, cystic acne scars, or scarring caused by other kinds of skin trauma. Scarred skin is characterized by a loss of elasticity, is often irregular in texture and tone, and results from damage deep in the dermal layers, which can be very difficult to target and repair. By repairing damaged collagen fibers, and synthesizing new ones, laser resurfacing greatly reduces the appearance of scars and restores the skin’s tone and texture. For the same reason that it is an effective treatment for scarring, ProFractional laser resurfacing is also an excellent treatment for deep wrinkles, melasma, fine lines, and skin volume loss.
