Laser skin resurfacing has long been hailed as aesthetic medicine’s secret weapon for the non-invasive treatment of scars, wrinkles, and poor skin tone and texture. Sciton’s® ProFractional laser resurfacing technology takes this revolutionary treatment to the next level, with less downtime and more dramatic results. If acne scars, persistent dullness, or deep wrinkles are getting you down, the team at Restorative Medspa is here to help you achieve transformative results with ProFractional laser skin resurfacing.
What Is Laser Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is a powerful aesthetic technology that uses a laser beam to target the skin with high-intensity light energy that is absorbed as heat energy at the cellular level, creating micro-wounds in the dermis that trigger the body’s natural healing processes. This results in increased collagen production and the remodeling of existing collagen fibers, restoring skin structure and volume, and significantly reducing the appearance of skin imperfections.
What Sets ProFractional Laser Resurfacing Apart?
ProFractional is a part of Sciton’s® range of erbium laser treatments, which all use a tunable laser beam of 2940 nm wavelength to achieve deep skin resurfacing and treat a variety of skin concerns. However, with ProFractional laser resurfacing, the laser beam is fractionated. This means that, rather than being exposed to a full-field laser beam that removes entire layers of skin, the skin is instead targeted with multiple tiny columns of focused laser light. This creates microscopic channels deep in the skin tissue, breaking down old, damaged skin structures and triggering the body’s healing processes to synthesize new collagen and remodel existing collagen fibers. The result is bright, smooth, rejuvenated skin that will leave you looking and feeling your best.
Since only a fraction of the skin surface is treated while surrounding tissues are left untouched, the healing period is also much shorter than traditional laser treatments. For this reason, the treatment is also more comfortable and less painful than other resurfacing procedures.
What Skin Concerns Does ProFractional Treat?
ProFractional is an excellent treatment for all-round skin rejuvenation, but it is especially effective for reducing the appearance of acne scars, surgical scars, fine lines, and wrinkles, and treating poor skin tone and texture. For firmer, tighter skin and a remarkable reduction in the appearance of imperfections such as scarring and melasma, this is the treatment you have been looking for.
ProFractional laser resurfacing is most frequently used to treat the face, but it can also be used on the neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs. It is generally well-tolerated by all skin types.
ProFractional For Acne And Other Scarring
Few treatments are as effective in the treatment of scarring as ProFractional, which is why its ability to successfully minimize the appearance of scars deserves special mention. Scar tissue is a part of the body's natural healing response after the skin is injured or broken. However, scar tissue often has an irregular texture and tone, and a loss of elasticity, leaving noticeable imperfections in the skin that result in patients feeling self-conscious. Because scar tissue forms deep in the dermal layer, it can be very difficult to treat.
ProFractional laser resurfacing represents a significant advancement in the treatment of moderate to severe scarring, whatever its cause. The ProFractional device is adjustable and can be set to penetrate into the deeper dermal layers, targeting scar tissue at its roots. Through the stimulation of new collagen and repair of damaged collagen, scar tissue can be effectively remodeled and the appearance of acne scars, surgical scars, and injury scars significantly reduced. With greatly improved texture, tone and color, and the restoration of lost skin volume and elasticity, your scars will become much less noticeable.
Your treatment will begin with a consultation with Dr Asma Ghafoor, Restorative Medspa’s dedicated aesthetic physician, so that she can understand your specific skin concerns and assess your suitability for treatment. Protective goggles will be placed over your eyes and a local anesthetic will be injected to the treatment area for your comfort.
The ProFractional device will then be adjusted to a depth suited to your skin profile, skin concern, and tolerance for downtime, and passed over the treatment area. The entire treatment will take 30-45 minutes. You will then receive post-treatment care, and receive detailed instructions for how you should look after your skin while it heals. Ideally, you should avoid direct sunlight for a few days and ensure that you incorporate a good SPF into your daily skincare routine.
ProFractional laser resurfacing can be combined with HALO hybrid fractional laser therapy to effectively treat skin laxity in particular. The combination of these two treatments is an excellent way to restore facial volume loss and achieve plumper, firmer, more youthful skin. ProFractional can also be used with BBL™ HERO light therapy to successfully treat pigmented lesions and other pigment-related skin concerns.
The downtime required will depend on the depth and intensity of your ProFractional treatment. Whereas some patients require minimal downtime, those who have more intensive treatments for deep scarring may require significant downtime. Typically, you should be able to return to work within a day or two, and your skin will completely heal within a week. For the first 3-5 days after treatment, your skin may feel swollen and/or itchy. Regularly using a non-fragranced moisturizer will help to soothe the skin while it heals.
You will notice improvements in your skin tone and texture within 3-5 days after your treatment. As the skin continues to heal over time and the effects of increased collagen production slowly become apparent, you will notice more dramatic results – some patients see continual improvement from ProFractional laser resurfacing for up to six months after the procedure. It is important to note that in the case of scar revision treatments, the results may take several months to become apparent, but will improve with each additional treatment session.
Your results will last for years after your treatment, particularly if you continue to take good care of your skin, use SPF daily, and schedule maintenance treatments.
The number of treatments you will need will depend on the severity of your skin concern. It is usually recommended that you begin with an initial series of two to four treatments, and follow these up with annual maintenance visits. If your lifestyle and tolerance for downtime allows, you may choose to schedule fewer, more aggressive treatments to treat your skin concern.
Dr. Ghafoor will assess your skin to create a personalized treatment plan that will help you to achieve your aesthetic goals. For example, those seeking scar revision for deep scars may require a more intensive treatment plan.
