What Is BBL™ Therapy?
In aesthetic medicine, BroadBand Light (BBL™) therapy and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy are the two leading types of non-invasive ‘photofacials’: treatments that use light waves to rejuvenate the skin. However, while IPL targets and destroys the skin’s pigment cells, clearing sun spots, freckles, and uneven skin tone, BBL™ is a more advanced kind of IPL that not only treats sun damage and pigmentation but stimulates collagen production to reduce wrinkles and tighten lax skin, providing skin rejuvenation on a cellular level. BBL™ therapy is also more powerful than IPL therapy, which means that fewer sessions are required to achieve the desired results.

How Does BBL™ HERO work?

Finally, the BBL™ HERO device can also be used to reduce unwanted hair on a more permanent basis through multiple treatment sessions. The device’s high-energy light pulses cause microscopic damage to the hair follicles while leaving surrounding skin cells unharmed, preventing hair regrowth and helping clients to achieve permanently smooth, hair-free skin. BBL™ HERO can be used to reduce hair on virtually any area of the body, including the underarms, legs, bikini area, arms, stomach, chest, back, and shoulders.
Forever BARE BBL™ is more comfortable than traditional laser hair removal treatments, and more effective. However, clients will still need to book multiple sessions, as body hair grows in different stages, and the only way to effectively target all hair follicles during the active growth phase is to stagger treatment sessions.
At Restorative Medspa, we are dedicated to ensuring your BBL™ therapy treatment is as comfortable as possible. Our highly skilled aesthetic physician, Dr. Ghafoor will begin by applying a cooling gel to the treatment area and place the chilled BBL™ HERO applicator on the skin to deliver the light therapy. While the treatment is generally painless, some clients may notice a mild, warm ‘snapping’ sensation during the procedure.
Following the treatment, you will receive post-treatment care and instructions to protect your skin during the healing process. The entire treatment will take around 30 minutes, although this can vary depending on the size of the treatment area.
One of the major benefits of BBL™ therapy is that it requires no downtime. Although you will experience redness and a mild sunburned sensation, you will be able to immediately resume your daily activities, provided you limit your exposure to direct sunlight. When BBL™ HERO is used to treat hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and uneven skin tone, the treated areas will darken over a few days and then flake off over a week or two following your treatment, as new, healthy skin replaces the layers of destroyed pigment cells as part of its natural cell turnover process. In some cases, those who receive BBL™ therapy for vascular lesions experience mild bruising.
Dr. Ghafoor will thoroughly assess your skin to determine if BBL™ therapy is right for you. Generally, BBL therapy is most suitable for those with light to medium skin tones (I to IV on the Fitzpatrick scale).
Initial results will become apparent roughly a week after your treatment, with continuous improvement until the final results become noticeable after about two to three weeks. The collagen-boosting BBL™ Forever Young treatment may take slightly longer to produce final results, given the normal rate of skin cell replacement. For most clients, optimum results will be achieved after two to three further treatments.
The number of treatments you will need depends on the kind of treatment you are having and the severity of your skin concern. Forever BARE BBL™ therapy usually requires six to eight treatments spaced about four weeks apart to achieve permanent hair reduction. For those seeking to treat severe pigmentation issues or extensive sun damage, several treatment sessions are recommended and these should be scheduled four weeks apart for the best results.
